KATRIN EISMANN

Brand Ambassador KATRIN EISMANN

Katrin specializes in interpretive travel, still life, and portrait photography and has never met a pixel she didn’t want to adjust, enhance, or interpret. She is an internationally respected artist, teacher, and author of Photoshop Restoration & Retouching, Photoshop Masking & Compositing, The Creative Digital Darkroom, and Real World Digital Photography. Katrin founded and chaired the Masters in Digital Photography department at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and, after twenty years at SVA, is now working for Adobe Systems to create educational and inspirational resources for the greater Lightroom community.

Katrin’s first camera was a Kodak Instamatic knock-off that used126 cartridge film and flashcubes, and she is currently a Sony Artisan. For Katrin, color is the emotion of an image and an attribute to explore and indulge in with great relish. She believes that there are no creative secrets or taboos; trust yourself, try, and learn from the picture you just created for the one you will make next.

What inspired you to become a photographer/videographer?

I see the world more clearly through a viewfinder, and exploring and discovering the surprising details and nuances in every day simply gives me great joy.

What is your photography style?

Experimental and overwhelmingly full of misfires, mistakes, and outtakes.

How did you get to where you are now?

Supportive and challenging professors encouraged their students to look to the future, which in 1990 meant seeing the potential of digital photography rather than its overwhelming expense and questionable image quality. Saying yes to challenges and opportunities and appreciating that our photography community is small, our impact to enlighten, entertain, and inform is large. Finally, welcoming all that appreciate and enjoy photography – it’s never the gear; it’s the eye, heart, and intent that matter.

Why is color management important to your workflow?

Reducing technical anxiety and doubt with a color managed workflow, allows me to concentrate on creativity.

What are your favorite brands you have worked with?

Adobe, Epson, Kodak, Sony, ThunderLizard, Calibrite and X-Rite.

What would you say is your greatest achievement to this day?

Working on being humble.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

In 1992 my husband fell in love with me as I explained the Radius, Threshold, and Amount settings in the Photoshop Unmask Sharpening Filter.

What is a top tip for people who aspire to do what you do?

Read, study, write, share, and ask for advice and then return that to the ones around you.

EQUIPMENT TOOLKIT:

ColorChecker Passport (I have one in every camera bag I use), ColorChecker Display Pro for monitor calibration and X-Rite i1Pro 3 spectrophotometer for printer profiling.
